Greater Sydney was first discovered when Captain James Cook landed in Botany Bay in 1770. The British Government decided to make a convict settlement there and Sydney was founded by Arthur Phillip in 1788, named after the British Home Secretary, Thomas Townshend, Lord Sydney.
